Over the years, I noticed that many of my adult patients were interested in having straight teeth, but did not want to go through two years of wearing braces.

Accelerated orthodontic treatment aims to enhance the aesthetic appearance of your smile by quickly and efficiently straightening the most visible teeth. The compromised treatment does not aim to correct any underlying malocclusion or functional problems.

The teeth are aligned with the use of ceramic brackets (white). They are very strong and generally do not stain. Adults like to choose ceramic because they “blend in” with the teeth and are less noticeable than metal. These are the type of braces actor Tom Cruise had.

Dr Lyons uses Tip-Edge plus ceramic brackets, manufactured by TP Orthodontics which are very translucent. They are very strong and do not stain. Tooth Whitening is also included as an added bonus with accelerated treatment.

Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth using a series of clear, almost invisible, removable Aligners. Invisalign combines Dr Lyons’ clinical treatment plan with proprietary 3-D, computer-generated software to make sets of unique, custom-made Aligners that move teeth in very precise increments.

Invisalign aligners are great for people who do not have severe problems. The “braces” consist of strong plastic trays that are fabricated especially for you. They are indeed invisible. If your bite is not severely off and your teeth are not severely crooked, then Invisalign would be a good choice. You would be able to get your teeth straightened without anyone seeing that you are wearing “braces”! This appeals to many adults, especially people who wore traditional braces as children and then need more treatment later in life. However, if your bite is very bad, if you need extractions or other appliances, then Invisalign will not work for you; you will need to wear traditional braces.

The treatment trays are computer-fabricated by Align Technologies, the company that makes Invisalign.

In-office bleaching (also called chairside or one hour bleaching) requires one or more visits to your dentist. Dr Lyons will apply a bleaching agent to your teeth, and uses a special light to quicken the work of the agent. Your gums will be protected from the bleach by either a gel or a rubber shield. Each visit can last anywhere from half an hour to an hour. At-home bleaching comes in a gel form along with a mouthguard. Place the gel into the mouthguard and use as directed. The duration and frequency of the treatment varies. Dr Lyons recommends overnight use for a shorter period of time.
